Mech Warrior Online is a total blast.
My first thoughts on this game were, “How did I not know this existed?” Mech Warrior Online is a blast to play. You get to run around in a giant robot and shoot other robots. The only thing better than robot’s fighting, is flying robot’s fighting, and you can do that too. Not only is the game fun, but it has a deep level of strategy.
Mech Warrior Online is a F2P battle arena shooter. You can play in the 1st or 3rd person. You can choose from a variety of Mechs, including 4 unique classes and dozens of sub-categories.  Each week has a different rotation of free Mechs. As you play matches, you earn in game funds that allow you to purchase additional Mechs and upgrades. You can then fully customize each Mech’s load-out and build. There are several sockets on each component that allow you to add equipment and weapons. There are dozens of weapon types to choose from, with varying ranges and damage. This game really has a surprising amount of customization for being free to play.
Good graphics, solid game play, and totally free.
The graphics are good. It has nice shading, textures, and effects. The game can be played on almost any PC. Playing the game on low settings doesn’t take away from the awesomeness. The soundtrack is fine, nothing too special. I found myself turning it down most of the time. The robot and weapon sounds are sweet though. You really can’t enjoy a robot battle game without awesome effect sounds.
The Mech types are divided into light, medium, heavy, and assault (super creative…). Lighter Mechs move really fast, but do less damage. The Assault Mechs do tons of damage, but move like a slug. You can probably guess that the other two types just fall in between these two categories. Light Mechs are great for scouting and harassing. Larger Mechs are mobile gun platforms. The real thing to note though, is that larger Mechs have a hard time hitting smaller ones. So you end up having to pick and choose for your own strategy. What’s really cool though, is that each Mech can be customized with more guns, speed, and armor. Not every Light Mech will play the same. This game really shines when it comes to customization.
A surprising and addictive game to play.
When you boot up a match, two teams are pitted against each other. They then proceed to stroll around the huge map looking for easy targets. Some smaller objects are destructible, but the terrain is not. Each match lasts approximately 15 minutes. Some game types require destroying an enemy base, while some ask you to capture objectives. No matter which match type though, destroying all enemies will also win.
Overall this game really surprised me. It’s fun, fast paced, and free. What more could anyone want? Who wouldn’t want to roam around in a giant robot, while blowing stuff up? I definitely recommend giving this game a try. Download it for free and give it a go.
