Spider-Man: Homecoming (Movie Review)

You can never have too many Spider-Man movies.

Going into this film I was not sure what to expect. I guessed that I would enjoy it more than the Tobey Maguire series, but less than than the Amazing Spider-Man reboot. As I was leaving the theater I decided that this original estimate was correct. The movie was great. It had everything you’d want from a super hero film. This latest reboot even had Iron Man make an appearance, and everyone loves Iron Man.

It was a bit off the wall at times.

Although Spider-Man was the main character, I feel that Iron Man kind of stole the show. Every time Tony Stark was on screen the atmosphere of the theater changed. People sat up straight, quieted down, and leaned forward to really focus in. Looking back I am not sure that having him be Spider-Man’s mentor was such a good idea. I think that it took away from Peter Parker’s story.

The nods to the rest of the marvel universe were cool, but I found them to be very distracting. Perhaps it’s just me, but I feel like this movie was less focused than other Marvel films. There was just too much non-Spider-Man stuff going on.

Avoiding a sticky situation.

I’m of the mindset that if you are going to remake something, that you should make it your own. Props to the director Jon Watt for doing just that. This movie was very different than previous iterations. It was a fresh take on the world of Spider-Man. I’m not sure how a 3rd retelling in such a short time could really be handled any better. At least they avoided another origin story.

One thing that I found particularly odd was the choice to make Peter 15 years old. His young age was a bit jarring, and the idea that he didn’t have a drivers license was weird. Then there was that scene where Iron Man scolded him like a child, but I guess he deserved it.

With all that said, I really liked the movie. It was a fun ride packed with adventure, excitement, and familiar faces. Disney is continuing to do a great job with the Marvel universe. Like all Disney/Marvel films I recommend going to see this one in theaters.
